One day as I was reading a book to him, George asked me, "How do children learn to read?" I replied, "The first step is to learn your ABCs." Then George asked, "How do children learn their ABCs?" That made me curious. I wondered "What are the most effective strategies to teach young children alphabet knowledge?" On this website I will share some of the things that I discovered when answering that wondering-- my action research question. Let's begin by learning about the alphabetic principle.
The Alphabetic Principle: What Is It?
The alphabetic principle is related to the understanding that letters represents sounds and that these letter sounds are blended together to form words. It is the knowledge of the names, shapes, sounds and symbols of the 26 letters of the English alphabet. This principle involves understanding that there is a connection between spoken sounds and written language. To fully understand the alphabetic principle is to "crack the code" of our written English system.
