From blackboards to whiteboards to Smartboards, from yellow legal tablets to iPad tablets, from rolling 16mm film to streaming videos, from story webs to the world wide web, educators' tools have evolved as teachers sought to find the best ways to deliver academic content to their students in engaging and meaningful ways. Computers can be an invaluable classroom tool for presenting academic content and providing practice, remediation and enrichment in a way students are enthusiastically receptive to receiving.
Embedding technology in learning is beneficial because it provides students with both visual and auditory stimulation (Suh & Gersen, 2013; Gardner, 1999).
Computer instruction and intervention improves alphabet recognition (Hillman & Moore, 2004; Young, 2009; Stevenson & Hackett, 2009).
Computer instruction and intervention helps children with disabilities "keep pace" (Hutinger & Johanson, 2001 & Tracey & Young, 2007).
Computer instruction and intervention increases student interest in learning about print (Walton-Hadlock, 2008).
Computer instruction and invention motivates children to stay on task longer (Gould, 2008; Labbo & Kuhn, 2000).
Using computers and interactive tablets prepares students for the "culture of technology" that exists outside of our schools (Jewitt, 2008).
