A student's own name is a highly motivating vehicle for teaching the names of the alphabet letters. Parents often teach their children how to write their names before they enter school. Children's familiarity with the letters that make up their own name can be a valuable tool in jumpstarting alphabet instruction. (Villiaume & Wilson, 1989; Treiman & Broderick, 1998; Bloodgood, 1999; Share & Gur, 1999).
Name Games
Name Puzzles: Write a child's name on a foam board. Cut up the letters of his name into puzzle pieces. Place a magnet on the back of each puzzle piece. Store the pieces in an envelope to play again and again on the family's refrigerator.
Name Sorts: Write a child's name on a sentence strip. Cut each letter into a separate strip. Write his name again on a legal envelope and have him match/place the letters on the envelope (name template) in the correct sequence. Store the sentence strip pieces in the name template envelope.
Mix and Fix Trix: Place enough magnetic letters onto a small pizza pan to create a student's name three times. Mix up the letters and have a child reassemble his own name in "trixplicate".
Puff Piece Writing: Use Wiki Stix, pipe cleaners, or Play-doh to have the students form the letters to make their names. Put them in the correct order to spell out their name.
